Angolako portu nagusiena izateaz gain[2] industria eta kultura hirigune garrantzitsuena ere da. Luanda portugesez hitz egiten den munduko hiririk jendetsuenetako bat da.

1576ko urtarrilean sortua, Afrikako hiri kolonial zaharrenetako bat da. Paulo Dias de Novais esploratzaile portugaldarrak São Paulo da Assunção de Loanda izenarekin sortu zuen. Brasilgo esklaboen salerosketaren erdigune izan zen esklabutza debekatu zen arte. 1975ean Angolako Gerra Zibila hasi zenean, portugaldar zuri gehienak alde egin zuten,[3] batez ere Portugalera. Luandako biztanleria asko handitu zen gerratik ihes egin zuten errefuxiatuengatik, baina azpiegiturak ez ziren egokiak gehikuntzari aurre egiteko. Horrek hiri inguruan txabola auzo handien sortzea ekarri zuen.

Hirian dauden industrien artean nekazaritzako produktuen prozesamendua, edarien ekoizpena, ehungintza, zementua, autoak muntatzeko instalazio berriak, eraikuntza materialak, plastikoak, metalurgia, zigarroak eta oinetakoak daude. Hiria petrolioaren gune ekonomiko gisa ere nabarmentzen da [4][5] eta hiritik gertu erauzten den petroleoa prozesatzeko findegi bat dago hirian. Pentsa litekeenaren kontra, munduko hiririk garestienetako bat da Luanda. [6] [7] Luanda biztanle gehienak Ambundu talde etnikokoak dira, baina azkenaldian Bakongo eta Ovimbundu taldeetako kideen kopurua haziz doa. Europako biztanleria ere badago, batez ere portugesez osatua.

Ekonomia aldatu

Administrazio eta merkataritza gune oso garrantzitsua da, eta bertan dute abiaburua Angolako burdinbide eta errepide nagusiek. Industriak ere garapen handia izan du azken urteetan: petrolio findegiak, janari industria, kimika, ehungintza. Petrolio hobi garrantzitsuak dira hiritik hurbil. Aipagarria da portuaren gainean den Sao Miguel gotorlekua. Artzapezpikutegi katolikoa. Unibertsitatea. Nazioarteko aireportua.
