Ozeano Atlantikoan bizi dira, Kantauri itsasotik Marokora, Mediterraneoan, Ozeano Indikoan eta Ozeano Bareko mendebaldean.[2][3] Lohian bizi dira, plataforma kontinentalean, 30 eta 500 metro arteko sakoneran.[3]

Espezieetako batzuek 40 zentrimetro arteko tamaina dute, nahiz eta bataz beste 20 bat zentimetro dituzten. Gorputz luzea dute eta ezkata arantzatsuak dituzte lau ilara ezberdinetan albo bakoitzean, burua lodia da, osifikatua eta arantzatsua. Ez dute mingainik. Kolore larrosa edo hori-arrea dute, eta sabelaldea argia izan ohi da.[2][3]

Fase pelagiko bat dute, eta gazteak direnean kostaldean bizi dira. Helduak egiten direnean ur sakonetara bidaiatzen dira.[3]. Gregarioak dira eta itsas-hondotik mugitzen dira, harrapakinen bila.[3]
