Chicagoko Unibertsitateko irakasle zela, ekonomia politikoko egunkaria zuzendu zuen 1973. urteaz geroztik. Merkatu ekonomiaren aldeko eta estatuaren parte hartzearen kontrakoa zen Stigler. Mikroekonomian baztertu egiten zuen kontsumitzailea era arrazional eta independentean bere lehentasunak sailkatzeko gauza dela onartzen duen hipotesia. Lehentasunen osaerari buruzko bere teoriak onartzen du jokabide aldaketek lotura dutela salneurri erlatiboekin eta aukerazko kostuekin. Makroekonomian, berriz, industria egiturei, merkatuen funtzionamenduari eta estatuaren parte hartzeari buruzko ikerketak egin zituen. Informazioak merkatuaren eta prezioen bilakaeran duen garrantzia azpimarratu zuen. Ekonomiako Nobel saria eman zioten 1982an.
