Gene mitokondrial eta nuklearren sekuentziei buruzko ikerketa filogenetikoek erakutsi zutenez, tradizionalki pelekaniformeen ordenan kokatu izan diren familia batzuek, izatez, pelikanoak eta tradizionalki zikoniformeetan sailkatu izan diren beste familia batzuk biltzen dituen gertuko talde bat osatzen dute. (Van Tuinen et al. 2001,^[2] Ericson et al. 2006,^[3] Hackett et al. 2008^[4]).
