== Historia ==
[[1749]]. urtean sortu zuten hiria eta 12 urte geroago gaztelua eraiki zuten. Gazteluaren inguruan garatu zen hiria eta XIX. mendean garrantzi handia lortu zuen Errusiako barnealderako merkataritza jarduerarako zituen komunikabide erraztasunei esker (Don ibaiaren bidezko garraioa). 1952. urtean zabaldu ziren [[Volga]] eta Don ibaien arteko ubidea eta Azov itsasorakoa. 1917. urtean sortutako unibertsitatea dago bertan.

== Ekonomia ==
1952. urtean eraikitako Volga-Don ibaien arteko ubideari esker jarduera handiko [[portu]] bihurtu da hiria (Errusia erdialdearen eta iparraldearen arteko merkataritzarako komunikabidea).
