BiografiaAldatu

Filosofian, filologia klasikoan eta zientzietan aditua zen eta filosofiako irakasle izan zen, beste lanbide askoren artean. Gaztetatik erakutsi zuen giza arazoetarako ardura; 1936an Nazioarteko brigadetako kide egin zen eta Espainiako Gerra Zibilean parte hartu zuen.

1942an Frantziatik ihes egin behar izan zuen, Estatu Batuetara lehenik eta Londresa gero, eta Bigarren Mundu Gerran erresistentziako kide izan zen.

Bere lanetan, gerrako nahasmendua eta langileen atsekabeak agertu zituen, mistizismo handiz, eta giza justizia bilatu zuen. Eliza katoliko erromatarraren kontra eta Kierkegaardek proposaturiko kristautasun existentzialistaren alde azaldu zen.

Haren lanak hil ondoren argitaratu ziren eta eragin handia izan zuten Ingalaterrako eta Frantziako gizarteen pentsaeran. Ofizialki, bere burua hil zuela esan zen, baina alemaniarren mendean ziren frantsesekiko elkartasunez haiek bezala bizi behar zuela erabaki eta elikadura eskasagatik hil zen.

Lan nagusiak: La pesanteur et la grâce (1947), L´Enracinement (1949), La condition ouvrière (1951), La source grecque (1953), Oppression et Liberté (1955).
