Cornell Unibertsitatean graduatu ondoren, hamar urte egin zituen Boston Globen kazetari. 1917an armadan sartu zen eta Siberiako Estatu Batuetako Indar Espedizionariora bidali zuten Errusiako Gerra Zibilean. Gerraren ondoren, Saturday Evening Post egunkariko berriemaile izan zen Europan, eta Municheko Putscharen berri eman zuen lehen kazetari estatubatuarra izan zen.
Booth Tarkingtonen laguntzarekin eleberriak idazten hasi zen. Bere jaioterriko pertsonaiak protagonista dituzten fikzio historikoko eleberriak idatzi zituen. Bere eleberririk ezagunena, Northwest Passage, izenburu bereko film bat inspiratu zuen. 1957an Pulitzer Sariaren zitazio berezia jaso zuen bere eleberri historikoengatik.
