The accepted attribution of this drawing to Holbein has been challenged by the art historian Christian Müller (Müller, 362). He cites the overall conception and individual details as grounds for his doubt, perceiving "an awkwardness that is out of character for Holbein". He concludes that this drawing is a workshop copy of a lost original, perhaps executed in Basel while Holbein was in London. The tradition of the Wild Man is still alive in the January processions of three honour societies in Basel. Holbein may have designed the window for the premises of one of these honour societies, "Zur Hären", whose members were hunters and fishermen and whose emblem was the Wild Man. |
