English: Pier Square, Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England shortly after opening. This new public space was created in the spring of 2011 on the sea front opposite the Grand Pier as part of the seafront improvement scheme. It had formerly formed the northern end of the Beach Lawns but the raised grass areas were surrounded by a traffic gyratory system; traffic is now largely confined to the west and south sides of the square. The centre point is an old decorative fountain which was refurbished as part of the scheme. The name "Pier Square" was chosen by local people but was changed to "Princess Royal Square" on 25 August to honour the visit by the Princess Royal on that day to formally reopen the Grand Pier. |
