Tuber rufum Pico ex Fries

Christine Fischer, truffle researcher at the Forest Science Center of Catalonia, Spain, leads truffle and mushroom forays in Spain. These truffles were found using trained dogs. Christine identified the truffles and took the photos labeled T rufum, posted with her permission, in her laboratory.

Tuber rufum Pico:Fr.1823 var rufum Fruit bodies are light-colored, small and sub-globose or irregular with very light reddish beige to brown with roughly-smooth surface made up of small, flattened warts. Found in spring through late autumn, growing with conifers and deciduous trees with wide range of habitats. Mild smoky odor. There are at least 5 varieties of T. rufum described: apiculatum, rufum, ferrugineum, lucidum & nitidum. Gleba pale white to pinkish or brownish-grey with cottony white marbling of sterile tissue, with gangliform pattern. Ascus, with sinuous, long peduncle, 1-6 spores/ascus, most frequently 3-4 spores/ascus. A trained dog was used to find the truffles.
