Indianapolisen jaioa, nerabezaroan Aurorara joan zen familiarekin. 1916an Floridako Stetson Unibertsitatean ikasten hasi zen eta 1918an armadan izena eman zuen. 1922an Chicagoko Unibertsitatean filosofian graduatu zen eta Guardia Nazionalean sartu eta artilleriako teniente mailara igo zen.
